I will be the first to admit that I was beyond thrilled to hear that Chaim Bloom had been fired as Chief Baseball Officer. He made awful decisions regarding player decisions for the Red Sox bookended by his losses of Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts, arguably two of the best players the Red Sox have had during his time in that position. I didn’t have many thoughts when Breslow was given Bloom’s former position; I didn’t know much about Breslow from an management/executive side, but I was encouraged by his early promises to build up the team. But boy do I have thoughts on the man’s decisions now, and let me tell you, they are not positive. This post comes a couple days late as the thought for it came Sunday when he acquired RHP Brad Keller. What is most important to note here is that Brad Keller was recently DFA’ed by the White Sox. This is the second player that Breslow has acquired to the 40-man roster after they were cut from the White Sox, the first being Zack Short. Now if we were picking up players from say the trash heaps of the Phillies, the team with the current best record, or something like that, that would be one thing, but we are literally paying for the trash of the team with the current worst record. I understand that there is only so much we can pay for but maybe wait for a good player at say the midseason trading period rather than paying for random failed players. In my opinion, the only good decision Breslow made regarding player trades and acquisitions was Tyler O’Neill and even that was a risk because he was never promised to be an amazing player. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Red Sox and will support them all the way, but I think the management needs to be doing more to build a team the fans deserve.
